Reclaim the night 2006

The rally and march was very successful this year, attracting 200+ women and children.  Three buses of women came from Lismore! The great Many Nolan, Mayor Jan Barham and Sharon Brodie all spoke admirably, and the march proceeded through the streets led by young women with arms linked under our ‘Byron Shire’ banner. We were loud, visible, and colorful – and a number of women thanked us at the closing for having organized a ‘great event’.

Media
Mandy Nolan interviewed me for an article in the Echo in the week before the march, which resulted in two calls: one from Dee Tinley saying she had a bunch of young women to lead the march, and the second from Byron Police saying they had been inundated with calls about current police responses to drink-spiking!

A report of the rally and march made the front page of the Echo the following week! The journalist Lou Beaumont did a wonderful report as she did on last year’s march. A part of her article quotes Mandy Nolan as saying on the night: “It’s appropriate we all wear red on the night. Red is the colour of love, power and passion. But it is also the colour of pain and rage. You are here tonight to demonstrate, by your presence and through your voice, that the current statistics on sexual violence against women are unacceptable!”
Congratulations and thank you to all women and children who attended.
