Services
The Women's Resource Service aims to:
- provide free and confidential information and referral for women and their children
- empower and assist women towards self-sufficiency and well-being in the community
- actively address issues affecting women in the community
The Women's Resource Service is open to:
all women in the Byron Shire, 16 years and over. ATSI women, lesbians, disabled women, women from non-English speaking backgrounds, young women, all women are welcomed at the service.
The Women's Resource Service can provide:
information, support and referral on any matters relating to domestic
violence, women's health, relationship issues, family or workplace
matters.
Women are entitled to three free counselling appointments per year, enabling time to explore issues of importance and reflect on what strategies may be useful for enhanced emotional health and safety.
Following these appointments, we can also assist with referrals to other counsellors, psychologists and mental health workers.
The Women's Resource Service is open:
Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 5pm. Enquiries and booking appointments are encouraged on these days: phone 02 6684-4299
We also have a Telephone Support Service:
Telephone support is available to women on any issue during our office hours. This service may be particularly useful for women who are not able to make face-to face appointments.
The Women's Resource Service can return your call, if the costs of the call aren't affordable.
Domestic Violence Outreach Service
The Women's Resource Service also offers a specialist Domestic Violence Outreach service, which is available in Brunswick Heads, Bangalow and Byron Bay (as well as Mullumbimby)from Monday to Wednesday.
Crisis support and safety planning, as well as hour-long counselling sessions, are offered to women affected by past or present abusive relationships. Women with domestic-violence related issues are entitled to up to six free sessions.
Call 02 6684-4299 or 0420 997 329 to speak with the worker and/or make an appointment.
Domestic Violence Support groups
At least twice a year, the Women's Resource Service facilitates an eight-week Domestic Violence Support group: ring for information about dates for the next group. There is no charge for participating in these groups.
If childcare is needed, we may be able to arrange care for pre-school aged children.
The Women's Resource Service is also committed to:
- organizing and participating in community events for women
- establishing groups and workshops for women on educational, creative and therapeutic themes
- participating in developing community resources for women and their children
We are involved in organizing community events such as International Women's Day and Reclaim the Night, and have assisted with establishing support groups and art groups for women in different towns of the shire.
The Women's Resource Service is also able to provide public speakers for schools, courses, groups, workplaces or luncheons.
Women who would like to be involved in planning events, want assistance with community activities for women, or arrange a speaker are encouraged to phone the service.
We welcome your ideas and suggestions. Please phone or drop in at the Women's Resource Service.
